Jamestown - The First Permanent English Settlement

After Williamsburg, we moseyed on over to the Jamestown Settlement.  We really enjoyed our time exploring the Visitor's Center, the Powhatan Indian Village, James Fort & the ships.
The boys posing at entrance of the Jamestown Settlement (it was September 11...did you notice the flags?)
Lucky us...they love homeschoolers and they had many programs just for us!!!  Here we are in the Jamestown Settlement Family Guided tour, in the re-created Powhatan Indian Village, learning about how fire was used to hollow out the logs to make boats!
Many hands make light work :-)
It was quite a task to dry, scrape and tan the hide of animals for clothing...the kids took turns using shells to scrape off the fur and soften the hide...
Listening and learning
The boys worked together to make strong cordage like the Powhatan Indians
We were able to tour the three ships (re-creations) that sailed to Virginia in 1607 to establish America's first permanent English colony...and learn more about life on the ships- The Susan Constant, The Discovery, and The Godspeed.

We toured James Fort and saw thatched -roof houses, the storehouse, and church.

We tried on the armour and made some little friends!
We saw an old time weapon being shot at the fort!  Major highlight :-)

Thoroughly enjoyed our three hours here at Jamestown Settlement!
