Dockweiler Beach - Playa del Rey, California

Our next stop was Playa del Rey...We stayed at Dockweiler State Beach. which was steps from the beach and the Pacific Ocean.  There was also a walking/biking trail that followed the beach for miles and miles.  We enjoyed quite a bit of outside time here in Playa del Rey!  The view speaks for itself!

A view from the street above!

The sites were a bit tight,  but that's what you get when you stay at a beach town.  It was soooooo worth it!

The walking path blended in with the sand, but you can see the curve of it...

The salty sea air makes Bryan spunky and fun!

The boys were able to dust their skim boards off...

Braden honed  his metal detecting skills.  It was upsetting how many rusty nails, bottle caps, and random, rusty metal that  he and Aaron found under the sand.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The water was chilly....Aaron showing off his skim boarding skills!

Braden skim boarding in the Pacific!

We were in the flight path of LAX...It didn't bother us though....We enjoyed watching the planes fly overhead.

Check out the size of that kelp!

No words....

Braden is a true hunter...

I love that the boys have ample time to spend together....I think they enjoy it, too!

Metal detecting together...

We loved the Santa Monica Pier

The boys taking in the sights and sounds

A mama seal and her pup, right under the Santa Monica Pier....The fisherman were feeding them!

California Sunset

California Bird of Paradise

This was right across the street from the campground...They offered private tours and it fit in nicely with our homeschooling curriculum, so we booked a tour.  We learned in great detail about how a waste water treatment plant works, the water cycle, and about how conservation, composting and recycling work best.  Our tour guide was very knowledgeable  and the  learning center was very hands on, which was awesome for my crew!  We also got 5 star treatment and were given a backstage tour of the Hyperion  Treatment Plant (we even got our own hard hats!!!)

Great visual exhibit detailing what happens inside a waste water treatment plan

Reviewing the water cycle

California is in a major drought right now and water is precious!
Do you see Bryan peeking through  the sewage tube?

Completing a recycling challenge!  They had to quickly decide which items to recycle!

Learning about our "Water Footprint"

We also learned about alternative forms of energy!

This was the highlight of our tour!

The boys and their tour guide!

We left the tour more educated consumers and we will work hard to do our part to conserve, reuse & recycle!
